POETRY FEATURE: PRINCESS MOON CHAN is a Cambodian American poet, teaching artist, and community organizer based in Boston, Massachusetts. With honor, she has graced the final stages of youth poetry festivals including the 2011 Brave New Voices as well as the 2012 and 2013 Louder Than A Bomb Massachusetts. In 2014, Princess Moon coached the winning team of the entire Louder Than A Bomb Massachusetts competition and received the Charmaine Santiago Galdon Award for her tireless community building. A Lowell, Massachusetts native, Princess Moon is the first and only poet to earn a spot on all three levels of slam poetry teams simultaneously. Princess Moon hosted the first ever Asian-American and Pacific Islander Poetry Reading at the 2013 National Poetry Slam in Boston. She has shared stages with notable writers across North America such as the U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky. In April 2014, Princess Moon was invited to perform for Governor Deval Patrick as he read a proclamation for Asian-American and Pacific
Islander Heritage Month, the first time ever in Lowell’s history. As a survivor of child molestation, rape, and dating violence, Princess Moon is an activist striving to stop all sexual abuse. She has opened up for and led the 2013 and 2014 Take Back The Night rallies in Lowell, Massachusetts. Her work is heavily based on challenging rape culture, ghosts of the genocide, and stories of survival as a queer, second generation Asian-American daughter. Howl Magazine has deemed Princess Moon as one of Lowell’s “Kick-Ass Women You Should Know.” You can find her work in the anthology Young Angel Midnight and her band new book,‘The Genocide’s Love Baby Learns to Sing.”
