Monday Jan. 24th DG welcomes back JADE SYLVAN, musical guest KIM JENNINGS, Visual Arts JOSH HOLDEN & The “Poem or Celebrity Tweet?” Challenge

Boston Poet, Fiction Writer and Musician JADE SYLVAN is no stranger to the Gerund. One of the first shows Nick and I hosted back in the Fall of ’09, she was the featured guest, but our insane promo campaign hadn’t kicked in yet, so alas, there was barely a show that evening. We promised to bring her back, and back we’re bringing her for two full poetry sets this Monday Night. A lot of you danced to her vocal dexterity when she musical guested us as alter-ego MADAME PSYCHOSIS. But Jade’s also making her a name for herself in the poetry world, her first full length collection, ‘The Spark Singer,” now out on Spuyten Duyvil Press, with accolades and touring galore. She has performed as featured poet at The Cantab Lounge, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, The Green Mill, and many other poetry venues, as well as numerous colleges and universities. She’s taught workshops in poetry writing and performance at 826 Boston, Brandeis University, Indiana University, and many other organizations. She also is a creatuve-writing and performance mentor for Books of Hope, a youth-literacy empowerment program based in Somerville, MA. Find out more about her at www.jadesylvan.com before helping us welcome her back in style!

MUSICAL GUEST – KIM JENNINGS – 2010 Worcester Music Award Winner for Best Female Vocalist and co-founder of Indie Record Label, Birch Beer Records is paying us a visit. Kim spent her first couple of years as a “singer/songwriter” performing – under her maiden name, Kim Flynn – at open mike nights in coffeehouses and bars near her hometown in the suburbs of Boston. And then, life happened: marriage, house hunting, and motherhood. After a few years away from music, Kim found that she couldn’t push the muse away. Writing new songs as fast as her hands can keep up, Kim just finished her debut full-length CD with Seth Connelly at Humming Lake Studio. The album, My Own True North, was released on December 1, 2009. “Singer-songwriter Kim Jennings has the voice of an angel. Most people only dream of having a voice like hers…Jennings has got it. Wispy, soft, sweet, powerful, gentle, commanding, beautiful…these are just a few adjectives that describe this gal’s natural vocal abilities. – Metronome Magazine

VISUAL ARTIST – JOSH HOLDEN – Co-Founder/Owner of Worcester’s very own, FYC (F@&# Yeah Center) over at 420 Pleasant Street (ha! 420), has been sniffing around the Dirty Gerund for last couple weeks, enjoying our collaborative aroma. He played a song last week on the open mic and we’re told he is quite handy with the paint brush, so we thought we’d invite him down to slap some paints around and see what’s what. The FYC is a combo skate shop/junk (the good kind) store/ performance venue/ cool hang out. We like local merchants almost as much as we like local artists! Bring them auction dollars and wee if you can go home with an original piece of collaborative gold!

BONUS RUCKUS – The “Poem or Celebrity Tweet?” Game Show Challenge! Head DG Curator and Co-Host NICHOLAS EARL DAVIS thinks you can’t tell the difference between a brilliant line of poetry and some smack Snooki or Kanye or Ocho Cinco tweets out to their adoring fans on a seemingly hourly basis! Prove the man wrong by signing up and taking your best educated guess. First to three correct guesses wins a nifty prize. Remember, with Dirty Gerund Game Shows, the funnest part is the buzzer!

Naomi Christenson takes good photos! House band-sters Taylor, Chuck, Larry, Martin and who knows who’ll drop in will rock your bums on the open mic and beyond! Yosh and Chicken tell tall tales but will rarely lead you astray! Snack-Time’s up for grabs. Volunteer for eternal thanks and glory. Hell, we may even sing you happy birthday, even if it isn’t your birthday! Last week’s show was incredible, let’s keep the amazing energy flowing! Nick likes parties. So do I. Don’t make us stomp things!

Here’s Musical Guest Kim Jennings singing sweetly….
